Online exclusive: Mike's blog - Govan is tweet

Websites can be a bit dull (present company excepted! – you can find a link to Scotland leading independent legal magazine on www.govanlc.com). Infrequent updates and the inability to interact with online content doesn't make for a dynamic service.

Some of the worst offenders are legal websites. Many UK law firms use websites as static online brochures to advertise their services. To be fair, if their purpose is to explain who the firm is and what services are offered then you pays your money and takes your choice.

People in glasshouses shouldn’t throw stones. Closer to home while Govan Law Centre (GLC) might have been radical a few years ago – for example we were the first in the UK to post online D-I-Y letters to reclaim bank charges, with £1bn now refunded – over the last wee while we have become a bit static too.

Our philosophy has been rooted in the notion of contributing to a free public legal education service. And although we’ve provided free online legal resources since 1999 it was time for a serious makeover.

We've always posted legal know-how online to enable advisors and citizens to take free advantage of our practical experience gained from the school of you win some, you lose some. And we've recognised the power of the internet to campaign for progressive law reform and social justice. We won't be changing that philosophy.

But we’ve radically changed our entry page to provide blog-style accessibility and a free subscription service. Our ‘blawg’ will sit above the main GLC website and provide us with a fantastic opportunity to update topical content easily and quickly. You can follow us on Twitter if you fancy a tweet.

Scotland’s legal profession needs to get to grips with popular culture whether that be online technology or otherwise. In endeavouring to do so we can give the public a chance to have their say, join in our legal discussions, and let us know if we are right or wrong! You can’t say fairer than that.
Mike
