An all day conference on criminal law has held on Friday in Edinburgh, organised by the Scottish Young Lawyers Association, with contributions from practitioners including John Scott, advocate Tom Bannigan, Sheriff Andrew Murphy, and advocate depute Dorothy Bain QC.
Bain has recently been appointed by Elish Angiolini to head up the Crown Office's new unit dedicated to prosecuting sexual offences. Bain outlined recent developments in the definitions of consent, and outlined the new statutory framework in the the Sexual Offences bill presently before the Justice Committee, which abolishes most common law sexual offences, codifyingthem into the new act.
The conference concluded with an evening drinks reception held at the city's Voodoo Rooms
