Exclusive: Council election pitches ABS opponents against supporters

The forthcoming election for Law Society Council seats from the Glasgow area could see members of the bloc opposing Law Society policy on ABS taking seats from those in favour, and possibly reversing current policy.

There are 10 candidates standing for 7 vacant seats to the Council of the Law Society in Glasgow, 7 of whom are vocal opponents of the ABS policy, and include members of the Glasgow Bar Association and the newly formed Justice for Scotland coalition which opposes ABS.

The Glasgow Bar Association has made four nominations, including President John McGovern. Walter Semple is standing for re-election and has been nominated by the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow, and Justice for Scotland founder members Frank McGuire and Mike Dailly have been nominated. They will contest seats presently held by vice President Jamie Millar, Austin Lafferty and Alison Atack, percieved as supporters of the policy.

In previous years, The Glasgow Bar Association have nominated 4 members and the Royal Faculty of Procurators 3 of their number, who have been elected unopposed. In this case, as ten candidates are standing for the 7 seats, an election will be held on 12 May, the outcome of which could have an impact on the direction of Law Society Council policy.
