"Shambolic and unacceptable": GBA dump on SLAB duty plan

The Glasgow Bar Association have publicly derided the Scottish Legal Aid Board's post-Cadder police station duty scheme, singling out Chief Executive Lindsay Montgomery for particular criticism after only nine solicitors in the GBA area signed up for the scheme, which was supposed to come into full effect yesterday.

Most of the Scottish criminal bar have boycotted the proposed scheme, creating disarray as Scots practitioners are unable to implement their ECHR obligations to arrested suspects.

"By the law the Plan was to be in place yesterday," the GBA said in a statement.

"As of close of business yesterday no Plan had been published, And the Scottish Legal Aid Board refused to give details of the plan to the Law Society of Scotland.

"The public are entitled to know what is going on. Mr Montgomery is never shy to court publicity. Why the silence now?" the statement adds.

"The situation is shambolic and totally unacceptable.

"Where is the plan. Why is it being kept secret? Most importantly, why does it not appear to be in operation, and why are the public not being told that?"

The GBA said the people responsible for the "farce" must be held accountable.

The Scottish Legal Aid Board have not responded to the Firm's requests for comment on this issue.
