Lord Hope backs cameras in court

Lord Hope, the Deputy President of the Supreme Court, has voiced his support for introducing cameras into court.

He said that the legal system needs to be better understodd by more people, and said that greater familiarity with the courts would help put people who use them at ease.

He was speaking at a mock trial event staged to introduce primary school children to the courts.

"I think we have a wonderful legal system in Scotland and I have always believed it needs to be understood by more people," he said.

"I have been in favour of televison in court ever since I was Lord President, and the more people get to understand how our system works the better. That's why it is a good idea to start in schools.

"We are very keen that anybody who comes into the court, jurors for example, knows what to expect and we can very easily put them at their ease."

The Firm has supported the introduction and extension of cameras into court, a campaign currently actively promoted by broadcaster Sky.
