4593 bus lane penalties issued in Edinburgh in six days
Edinburgh's new charging system for enforcing observation of the city's bus lanes has netted 4593 fines of £60 in its first six days of operation.
The total revenue generated by the fines amounts to £275,580.00
"Better control of bus lanes may help to increase the number of people using public transport in Edinburgh," the Council says on its website.
"Income from any fines will initially cover the set up costs of the scheme. Any surplus income will go toward supporting local transport improvements."
Edinburgh Council has also confirmed that a driver was issued with a fine prior to the charging coming into effect. The Council said the driver was entitled to appeal and that any errors would be rectified then.
It also admitted that some motorists who transgressed the greenway during the three-week trial period before enforcement began were not issued with a warning letter.
