Contested Wills up 200%

This year’s Will Aid survey into wills and inheritance issues indicate that 33% of people who have made a Will have chosen not to use a solicitor. "This means they could be storing up problems for their loved ones in future," the charity said in a statement.

"You can pick up a Will form at any post office or stationers or write your Will online or you can visit a professional will writer. All of these can seem very cheap and convenient options compared to going to see a solicitor. But all could turn out to be a very expensive option in the long run," the statement continues.

"According to a report by the Law Society , almost 73% of solicitors responding to a survey had clients reporting problems with a non-solicitor will writer. Add to this the fact that the number of contested wills has risen by about 200% in three years and it is clear that the better option is to sit in a room with a qualified solicitor. He or she is expert at explaining the legal implications of our expressed wishes and can also question us about our circumstances to make sure we have not overlooked something – or even worse – someone - important."
