Law Society Ponders Anwar Acquittal

The Law Society has issued a statement acknowledging the outcome of the Aamer Anwar contempt of court case, but has refused to confirm whether it will take any action of its own against the cleared solicitor.

The Law Society retains the right to impose its own sanction on Anwar, if they conclude that he has breached the Society's code of conduct for solicitors.

”The Society notes the High Court Decision today, Tuesday, July 1, that there has been no contempt of court committed by Aamer Anwar," said Philip Yelland, director of Regulation at the Law Society of Scotland in a statement.

“The Society also noted that the Court has not made a complaint to the Society about Aamer Anwar's conduct, which it is entitled to do. The Society will now consider the Opinion of the Court in this case in detail and take any appropriate action."

Anwar was cleared by a panel of three judges following Lord Carloway's referrral of Anwar to the High Court, after he made public statements following the conviction of his client Atif Siddique on terrorism charges.
